A gastric bypass is a surgical procedure that creates a small pouch in the stomach and is directly connected to the small intestine.
When food ingested enters this reduced stomach pouch, it will then pass directly into the small intestine, bypassing most of the stomach and the first section of the small intestine.
This treatment is the most suitable for those patients with a BMI of 28-35 (moderate obesity).
This procedure is performed in the endoscopy room, not in the operating room, under sedation and does not usually require more than 30 minutes.
Once sedated, and thanks to the endoscope, the silicone balloon is placed in the stomach where it is filled with a saline solution. This limits the capacity of the stomach, generating a sensation of rapid satiety.
After the implantation you can go home.
After 6-12 months, the balloon is removed using the same technique.
You only need to remain in Spain for one week.
Although, it would be recommendable for you to stay for up to two months, in order to have a complete follow-up and easy access to the clinic. You must return on the agreed date for removal of the balloon.
Your doctor will tell you the exact times when starting the treatment.
